You can't hurt me, I've been on the internet since sixth grade. Hand-Me-Down came to me in little thoughts and memories and this was one of the first ones I scribbled down in the earliest stages of working on this book. I kept rolling the word "parents" around in my mouth after someone referred to theirs and realized how odd the word felt coming out of my mouth. The more I said it each letter started to break away and separate until it didn't feel like a word at all. Anyway... it's been a bit weird trying to promote this book because it's so deeply personal to me and anytime I try to think up a way to share it with others because I would like it to perform well, I just find myself kind of lost. #graphicnovels #comics #comicstrip #grief #comicartist #illustration #artist Can't believe Hand-Me-Down has been out for two whole weeks! It's so strange being finished with a project you worked on for so long and just having it float around out there in the world. Here's a page I drew early on in the book. When working on autobiographical comics I find myself thinking of it more like a series of memories all strung together. So each page stands as a unique thought or memory with the page beside it work to accompany that thought. Then all the memories are strung together like paper dolls to make a book. I'll be honest, I never actually put them in my mouth aside from a small little bite here and there to test the squishability of them. But how wonderful was that little nibble. Did you catch the very very very minuscule Princess Diaries reference in Hand-Me-Down? 📕 I may be sad but I ALSO watch Disney Channel. Also thank you to everyone who has read and enjoyed the book so far! It means so much to me!!🫀 I kinda just assumed it was a women's empowerment saying for the modern world of the early 2000s. I knew lots of people with bras and nobody with boots. HAND-ME-DOWN is out!!!!!!!!!! 📚Swipe to see a picture of me as a precious young child shortly after my grandma got official custody of me! I worked on this book for like a million years and it's so close to my heart and I hope everyone enjoys it, especially those out there experiencing grief or loss. ❤️❤️❤️ #comics #comic #graphicnovel #graphicnovels #bookstagram #books #comicbooks #mgbooks #middlegrade #sadgaypeople #gaydorkwithglasses Hand-Me-Down comes out in less than a week on the 28th!! Here’s a little clip that looks cool in the book as a page flip, and I thought could work as a fun Instagram swipe! It’ll be two whole years since my grandmother died and it doesn’t feel like it’s been more than a few months for me. I feel like I should be excitedly promoting this book but I just feel a deep melancholy pit in the center of my chest. I was so excited to show her it when I was finally finished. Grief is so interesting. Asked one too many questions and suddenly I wasn't allowed to watch Golden Girls on the living room floor because it wasn't "age-appropriate." :/
